Degree in chemical engineering from Bahir Dar University, Ethiopia, his MSc degree in Petroleum Engineering from the Norwegian university of science and technology, Norway and his PhD in Chemical Engineering from Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS, Malaysia. Currently, he is a lecturer at the petroleum Engineering Department of Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS. He joined the university since 2013. In between 2008 and 2013, he was a full time Lecturer at the School of Chemical and Food Engineering of Bahir Dar University and a part-time lecturer at Department of Earth Sciences of Mekelle University. In addition to coordinating and facilitating Field development planning projects, he has been teaching both chemical and petroleum engineering courses throughout his career. Dr Berihun has secured and completed quite a few research grants worth  more than USD 100,000 both in his previous and current universities. His current area of research is mainly in reservoir modeling and simulation and in particular quick reservoir performance prediction and applied machine learning for applications such as history matching, closed loop reservoir management and integrated operations. He has authored and co-authored over 15 journal and conference articles and has also jointly authored a book chapter on Assisted History matching of a numerical reservoir model. He also edited two books as a result of the International conference on integrated petroleum Engineering and Geosciences which took place in August 2014 and August 2016. He also edited his third book, entitled Selected Topics on Improved Oil Recovery, in collaboration with Institute Teknologi Bandung, Indonesia.
